Who taught you to fish? Do you remember the first time? Well, I do.

My grandmother taught me to fish behind her little trailer, on a creek about a foot deep, under the railroad bridge. Fishing equipment wasn't that important then. She cut down a tag alder branch and tied some black line to the end and wrapped it around the end. She tied a golden swivel to the other end, added a hook, and worm and we started fishing.

We caught some dandy brook trout under that bridge. Some fisherman had all the fancy rods and reels and weren't catching anything. I guess the good Lord shined on us and proved we didn't need anything more than our imaginations and a few necessities. I'll never forget that experience and I'm sure you have your own to remember.

Fishing today has become more sophisticated and still manages to be a big challenge and very popular to many.  I too, have fishing rods and reels that I use, but I'm sure in need of a few supplies every year and I'm sure you manage to update your fishing equipment from time to time. What ever the case, fishing is still a great way to relax and enjoy Mother Nature at its finest.

Most of the time I don't even care if it is a good time of year, or if the weather or wind is wrong, or the water temperature isn't right, I just want to get on the water and get a line wet. I enjoy the calm waters of a nearby lake, no matter what the outcome.

I have several friends that enjoy all kinds of fishing, fly fishing for brook trout, big water trolling on the Great Lakes, pan fishing, and especially walleye fishing. It doesn't matter which type of fishing is your passion, just get out there and do it. Find the fishing equipment that can make you successful and make the trip most enjoyable.

Remember, it's safety first. Make sure someone knows where you are going and when you should return. Take the proper safety equipment. Know the weather conditions, short-term and longer. Plan ahead.

Once you do this, pack up that boat with rods, reels, tackle, nets, fish locators, trolling motors, bug repellent, your GPS System, sunscreen, and plenty of snacks and take to the water. And if you're like me and find yourself in the northern region of this country, you get an added bonus of enjoying ice fishing. Ice fishing requires you to have even more sophisticated fishing equipment to find them. Not only that buy better equipment just to stay warm and interested.

But you know what, this is another sport that doesn't require you to have every latest device to enjoy it.  You get to decide what is basic, and what is necessary. And we're here to help you find it.
